GRAJAUSKAS, Algis Joseph

Algis was born to run. If it was possible to outrun cancer, he would have. First diagnosed in 1992 with lymphoma, he kept up the good race until glioblastoma stopped him in his tracks on Saturday, October 16, 2021 at the age of 64 years.

Algis was a wonderful husband to Janice (MacDonnell), supportive father to Lukas and Marinna (Devin), caring sibling to Dana, Paul, Dalia (Jonas Trumpickas) and beloved son, uncle, cousin, nephew. With his sweet smile and his beautiful soul, he inspired many. Born into an athletic Lithuanian family in Hamilton, ON on October 19, 1956 he was raised playing tennis and basketball. He went on to run track at McMaster University, at one point being the fastest sprinter in Ontario. He moved to Fort McMurray, AB in 1981 where he met his wife and best friend Janice. He started his teaching career there, moving to Calgary in 1989. He welcomed his children into the world with joy and taught them to face every day in a positive manner.

As well as running, he loved to juggle, garden, carve and go for long walks. But his real vocation was for teaching. He made a career of uplifting those that didn’t always have a voice, becoming an amazing special ed teacher. He finished his teaching career at Central High School, where he shared his passions in the classroom, as well as on the track and coaching cross country running. Algis loved life and we will continue to honour his legacy by living ours to the fullest.
