What better way to come together (virtually) during our winter months with friends and family to have a bite and watch a stimulating movie. (Not recommended for children under 12). Please note that this film is in French and subtitled in English. It has been previewed and is very clear & viewable.
Last year our members came together to watch films that stimulated and inspired post-film discussion. Highlighted films included The Grizzlies; Social Network; Crip Camp.
Our next film is on January 25th. (trailer below)
If you have seen the film, you can either watch it again or just register and join us for the post-film discussion with fellow members.
Monsieur Lazhar premiered in 2012 in theatres and has received 97% Rotten Tomatoes Rating and 86% from Audience reviews. It was nominated for Best Foreign Film at the 2012 Oscars and was a winner of numerous film festivals including Toronto, Berlin, Sydney, Sundance etc.
Bachir Lazhar, an Algerian immigrant, is hired to replace an elementary school teacher who died tragically. While the class goes through a long healing process, nobody in the school is aware of Bachir’s painful former life; nor that he is at risk of being deported at any moment. Adapted from Evelyne de la Cheneliere’s play, Bachir Lazhar depicts the encounter between two distant worlds and the power of self-expression. Using great sensitivity and humor, Philippe Falardeau follows a humble man who is ready to transcend his own loss in order to accompany children beyond the silence and taboo of death.
THIS FILM WILL STIMULATE DISCUSSION AS IT HIGHLIGHTS THE ART OF TEACHING AND CHALLENGES THAT WE HAVE ALL FACED IN OUR TEACHING CAREERS IN RELATING TO OUR STUDENTS AND THEIR WORLD.
PLEASE NOTE THAT FOR ALL FILMS THERE WILL BE A VIEWING OPTION!
As before, we will be using the zoom platform for this event. Once you have registered through the Event Registration on the CRTA website or via email, Ron Jeffery will send you the link to the zoom meeting room along with instructions. If you do not receive the link by January 21st , please contact Ron.
Ron will briefly introduce this 1 hour, 30 minute film and will lead the discussion following the film. We expect it will be a thoughtful and stimulating evening.
