THE CHILDREN’S TRAIN

A moving and engaging film in an

historical setting

Registration Closes Monday October 20th

Description of Activity:  Join us for a zoom dinner/movie/discussion night on Tuesday October 21st, at 6 PM.

Our films are chosen for interesting themes that lend themselves to discussion by viewers.  Most selected have been award winners at film festivals.

Even if you have seen the film, joining our discussion after the showing will enhance your viewing and understanding of the movie.

Theme: The Children’s Train is a powerful and heartfelt story of hope, finding home and family. Most of the story is told from seven-year-old Amerigo’s point of view. Amerigo’s voice is rambling, taking in everything as a child would see and understand it. What better way to come together (virtually) than with friends, former colleagues, and family to have a bite and watch a stimulating movie. Our members love the discussion at the end of the film to share reactions and ideas about the film. If you watch the film at another time, you can still join us for the discussion!
You are encouraged to mark your calendar, so you don’t miss it! As soon as you are registered, I will send out the logon info to you with further instructions.

Synopsis:

The Children’s Train (original title: Il treno dei bambini) is a fictional film based on the real post-World War II Italian initiative called Treni della Felicità (Happiness Trains), where impoverished children from southern Italy were sent to host families in the north to escape extreme poverty. While the characters and their specific stories are fictional, the program itself is a true historical event, with the initiative having relocated approximately 70,000 children between 1945 and 1952. The film, based on a novel of the same name by Viola Ardone, explores the hardships of post-war Italy and themes of class inequality through the eyes of one such child, Amerigo.  Given all that is happening in our world today, this film reminds us there has always been a struggle for freedom.
You will be left in thought and reflection long after the film ends. I am truly looking forward to our discussion.
