Awakenings

Registration For Our First Film Opens Tuesday October 8th!
Description of Activity: Join us for a zoom dinner/movie/discussion night on Tuesday October 22nd at 6 PM.
Our films are chosen for interesting themes that lend themselves to discussion by viewers. Most selected have been award winners at film festivals. Even if you have seen the film, joining our discussion after the showing will enhance your viewing of the movie.
Theme: The power of the human spirit, perseverance and recovery. An outstanding film starring Robin Williams and Robert DeNiro – directed by Penny Marshall.
What better way to come together (virtually) than with friends, former colleagues, and family to have a bite and watch a stimulating movie. Our members love the discussion at the end of the film to share reactions and ideas about the film. If you watch the film at another time, you can still join us for the discussion!
You are encouraged to mark your calendar, so you don’t miss it! As soon as you are registered, I will send out the logon info to you with further instructions.
Synopsis:
Awakenings follows neurologist Malcolm Sayer (played by Robin Williams), who, in 1969 while working at a hospital in the Bronx, began extensive research on catatonic patients who survived the 1917-1928 epidemic of encephalitis lethargica. Sayer learns of a new drug that helps patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease and believes it could be of use on catatonic patients.
He runs a trial on patient Leonard Lowe (played by Robert De Niro), who completely “awakens” and starts to show major improvements, but the experiments soon come across some obstacles that threaten the life quality of the patients who were just starting to deal with a new life in a new time. As detailed in Sacks’ memoir, the drug and experiments shown in the movie are real, despite Awakenings being a fictional story.
The acting is outstanding, and you will be drawn in to the lives of Dr. Sayer and Leonard as they navigate the challenges of not just the impact and possibilities of modern medicine, but of life itself.
You will be left in thought and reflection long after the film ends. I am truly looking forward to our discussion.
