Description of Activity:
Join us for a zoom dinner/movie/discussion night on Tuesday April 21st, at 6 PM.
Even if you have seen the film, joining our discussion after the showing will
enhance your viewing and understanding of the movie.
Theme: What a great way to enhance your ‘dinner and a flick’ movie night
than to have a group of nonnas (grandmas) serving up dishes to end our
film festival season on a culinary and cultural note!
A great opportunity to come together (virtually) with friends, former
colleagues, and family to have a bite and watch a stimulating movie. Our
members love the discussion at the end of the film to share reactions and
ideas about the film. If you watch the film at another time, you can still join
us for the discussion! (and you just may pick up a few recipes to try!)
You are encouraged to mark your calendar, so you don’t miss it! As soon
as you are registered, I will send out the logon info to you with further
instructions.
The ingredients are simple, the cooking process unhurried and the history
rich. The Italian dishes honored in director Stephen Chbosky’s sentimental
dramedy “Nonnas” don’t come from professionally trained chefs, but from
women of Italian heritage whose flavors have been perfected over
generations. Each forkful packs a tasty homage to where they come from
and to the people who loved them. And some of the film’s components are
indeed authentic: Liz Maccie’s screenplay provides a fictionalized take on
how Jody Scaravella opened Enoteca Maria, a real-life Italian restaurant
where grandmothers cook.
Thematic elements which our post film discussion will consider
include:
1. The importance of retaining both culture and connection to our own
and previous generations
2. How do we help navigate advancing age and relevance to pass along
our experience and stay involved in our community?
3. The importance of food to a culture – be prepared to share your
favourite family recipes!
4. The role of tradition in our lives….and sometimes the conflicts it can
create!
You will be left in thought and reflection about the power of food as a way
to connect to one another!
I am truly looking forward to our discussion, though be prepared to be very
hungry at the end of the film!
