OLD, Richard Louis
July 21, 1938 – August 11, 2017
Our family mourns the loss of Richard Louis Old. Raised in Blairmore, Alberta, Rich moved to Calgary with his family in 1954. He graduated from St. Mary's Boy's School, and attended the University of Alberta at Calgary where he met his future wife Judy and completed an education degree. He taught in the Calgary Catholic school system for 34 years and was a school principal for 29 of those years. He earned a Master of Arts degree from the University of British Columbia in 1972. He is a former president of Local 55 of the Alberta Teachers' Association, and was a committed advocate for social justice. Rich was a man of integrity who provided unwavering support to his children and grandchildren. He loved folk music, exploring family history, and going to the gym. Since their retirement as teachers more than 20 years ago, Rich and Judy have enjoyed travelling, learning to golf, and enjoying each other's company. Rich is survived by his wife and partner of 56 years, Judith Old, and by their children, Michael Old (Roseanne Moran), Nancy Amoruso (Joseph Amoruso) and Timothy Old. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren Michael and Gemma Amoruso. Rich is survived by his sisters Monica Grainger and Julie Holmes, and their families. He was also very special to Judy's sisters Joanne Volontè, Janie Smith, and Wendy Sparks, and their families. Rich was a much beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews. We are so grateful to those who helped Rich over the last few months through his cancer treatment. Our family would especially like to thank the healthcare staff on Unit 61 at Foothills Hospital who provided Rich with excellent and compassionate care in his last days.
